  • Budget! Budget! Budget! Write out your budget and stick to it.

  • Cash in hand is cash gone. It is a lot easier to use cash than it is to use card. So rather keep only a minimum amount of cash available.
  • Purchases made using cards incur transaction fees. Therefore keep your spending to a minimum.
  • Either get rid of your credit card or hide from yourself it very, very well!
  • If you have multiple credit cards, settle their debts and get rid of all or most of them.
  • Make lunch for work, and add the cash you would have spent to a jar. At the end of the week or the month, count how much you have and use it to make an additional payment on one of your debts.
  • When you use cash at the shops, come home and empty your wallet into your money tin.
  • Try to negotiate lower interest rates with your credit providers.
  • Make sure you always meet your minimum payment commitments.
  • If you need to take on extra work for extra cash, then do so. Weekends and after hours can mean time well spent and money well made!

  • Build up an emergency fund. You never know what may happen, as it will happen unexpectedly.
  • Research cheap entertainment ideas instead of spending money on weekly outings.
  • Make sure that your family understands the need to cut down on expenses in order to reduce your debt faster.
  • Make use of the snowball effect when getting rid of debt. It can help you to pay off debt faster or save on interest and fees.
  • Hot water bottles will ALWAYS be in fashion! In winter, turn off the heaters and rather pile on the blankets and add a hot water bottle to the mix, therefore saving on electricity.
  • In summer, forget the fizzy drinks. Rather fill some water bottles and add pieces of fruit for flavouring. This will help you cut down on expenses, too. It is also far more healthier than sugar laden fizzy drinks
  • Be willing to sacrifice take-outs and rather have a hearty home-cooked meal.
  • Spend time with your family playing board games, rather than sending everyone to the cinema – thereby saving on entertainment costs.
